Leadership in Beowulf, Oedipus the King, and Antigone

Leadership can be defined as the ability of a superior to influence the behavior of a minor or group and persuade them to follow a particular course of action. A leader sets a course of action and ensures that everyone follows the action. Leading can apply to leading oneself, other individuals, groups, organizations and societies. The nature of how leading is done depends on the framework of the situation, ones point of view, and on the nature and needs of those involved. While leadership is learned, the skills and knowledge processed by the leader are influenced by their traits, such as beliefs, values, ethics, and most importantly character. For example, when Beowulf fights the dragon, it seems as if his age finally got to him and that the dragon will ultimately win. As the battle progresses, Beowulf finds something w ithin and finally slays the beast. In society today, the bad boy image has become very prevalent in high schools. These kids believe that bullying and doing drugs will make them popular in life, but as they find out later in life, it was the wrong decision. They realize that being bad was not a better option than being good. They see that good always prevails. Beowulf was a great example of a leader, as he took on responsibility that was ahead of him and fought without the need of money. Oedipus the King is a tale that starts out with the city of Thebes suffering from a drastic plague and their king, Oedipus wants to find out why. Creon is sent to find the reason why the plague is occurring, and sends Tiresias to tell Oedipus the oracle. The oracle says that the murderer of Laius must be found and punished. This caused Oedipus to proclaim that he would do everything so that he could to find the murderer. Tiresias says that the murderer is Oedipus, but Oedipus is quick to disagree. Oedipus came to the towns of Thebes because of a prophecy that was given to him. He was told that he was to kill his father and even sleep with his own mother.
